Living with war in Burbank
When Friday started, I had no plans for the evening. Little did I know I'd end up sitting with just a handful more than a dozen people in a listening room at Reprise records in Burbank, given exclusive access to Neil Young's yet-unreleased album, Living with War. I know! Weird, eh? But, N emailed me during the day about this post, and yada yada yada, we ended up being two of the chosen.
It was a pretty cool experience, I have to say. Just being in the record company office, signing in, surrendering our cell phones, and waiting in the lobby under a giant poster of Madonna (Maverick offices were in this building too...thank you N, for allowing me to be excited about that without making fun of me. At least out loud.) was exciting. (I do have to say, though, that while we were waiting, and for a good few minutes into the album, I was fully expecting to be punked. Seriously, isn't this exactly how people get sucked into being subjects of lame-ass reality shows? But, we made it out of there without having to sign release forms of any kind, so that was good.)
Anyway, the point of this tiny listening party was to encourage some grassroots marketing and good old-fashioned word of mouth. The guy who invited and greeted us there asked us to use our blogs and emails to put the word out about the album and its message. Apparently, the album was made in record time, and will be released online sometime next week. N told me he read that after sitting back and hoping the younger generation of artists would speak out against the war in Iraq (among other things), apparently Mr. Young decided he could wait no more (I'm still holding out for the Mandy Moore protest album. Come on, Mandy!).
It was pretty cool to just sit and listen to an album in its entirety without the distraction of driving or reading or whatever you usually do while listening to music. The fancy screening room didn't hurt, either (though someone really needs to dust the bookshelf that held the sound system. What? I'm easily distracted!). The album rocks, really, and definitely sends a message. Let's just say that Mr. Bush and his Red State Posse will not be happy.
Anyway, plenty about the album can be read online, in particular on the blog that I linked to up there. You can also check out the lyrics on this site. I know that N and I will be downloading/purchasing this album as soon as its available. I think you'll like it too. (Well, maybe not you, but I'm guessing you'll appreciate the message.) Read more about others' experiences at the listening party at the blog linked above as well. (They tend to be more specific about each song's contents.)
Back to our regular programming tomorrow!

Hi,
I don't mean to clog up your blog but I'm trying to spread around a songwriter that is mostly unknown but who has written some incredible songs of protest. The current climate seems to be turning toward a readiness to understand the kind of writing he has been doing. I do hope that you will spend some time reading and listening to his work.
This is a great song indicting the infantile side of American culture, theiving politicians, greed, God, apathy, cell phones, global corporate domination, blood thirsty conformity, digital surveillence, and a host of other toxins currently infecting Earth.

Here is another incredible song outlining the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. It's spot on and dangerously poetic.

Sure, comment away! I have an invisible stat counter on this blog, so I can tell hundreds and hundreds of people have seen this particular post (which is awesome!). I'd love it if anyone and everyone who wants to lets me know where they're reading from!

This album is going to sell alot I imagine. I hope this adds to the momentum to get hearings underway for the impeachment of George W. Bush.
Justice Through Music also got to sit in on the preview, and they have some cool things to say about the album, and will also have streaming audio from the album on March 28th. Go Here:

How dare he criticize our country's leadership during a time of war! Hiding behind "free speech," Neil Young is comforting the enemy with his doomsday scenario.
I'm not sure why you think he's "hiding" behind free speech, Anonymous (speaking of hiding), but hey, one of the nice things about this country is our right to NOT have to hide to speak our minds. I think it'd be terrible to live in a country where you weren't allowed to criticize your government, and I'm sure you would too. Oh, and I don't think our enemies are coming to us for "comforting," either.
I am reading from ground zero NYC,and I loved the neil young movie "Heart of Gold". Amazing. Keep up the good work.

Wow, some of the comments bolster my view that folks that live in America today do not understand and appreciate freedom!
Niel Young is simply voicing his views (and those of many others, including mine). If you think this is 'unpatriotic' or 'hiding behind free speech' I suggest that you talk to a veteran of any war and as them what they were fighting for!
Looking forward to hearing it. Neil - i'm really glad you're still making records.

Great music.
Check out the Pink song entitled "Dear Mr. President" on her new album. Seriously. It's a great commentary on the current state of affairs in this country.
CNN and FOX are government outlets. That bimbo from CNN that interviewed Neil was an airhead.
Thank you Neil for speaking out!!!

WTF?
After browsing blog posts about Neil Young's new music over the last 24 hours, I have already notced that the person who posts under the name of BOWL OF CHILI (who has posted elswhere too) is either suffering from a pathological hatred of Neil Young, or doesn't agree with the American democratic idea that people should be able to express their opposition to the government's actions.
He is like one of the idiotic sheep in the novel "Animal Farm" whose only purpose is drown out all debate with their chants. Ignore his bleatings.
I'm a Neil Young fan and a war opponent and I really appreciated this preview of his new CD. Message for "Cold Bowl Of Chili": please have your grammar and spelling checked before you post anywhere again. Your errors make you seem ignorant and your opinions seem less important because of this.
I have been listening to these tracks all day. There is some incredibly moving music on this disc. This is great addition to his catalog and my collection.
My name is TJR and I was one of the 100 voices that sang in the choir throughout Neil Young's new album.
I wrote an account of my experience on my website if anyone is interested. http://tjrmusic.com/news.html
